Psalms 107-109
1 Corinthians 4
“Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with Me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done.” Revelation 22:12
During Jesus’s earthly ministry, He told His disciples, “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with Me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” To this, Thomas responded to Jesus, “Lord, we don’t know where You are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:2-6). The truth that Jesus is coming again was not meant to be a platitude but a promise fulfilled in and through Jesus.
When a new war begins, a new conflict arises or a natural disaster strikes, some of us may think that these are signs that Jesus is coming “soon,” which could easily get us buried by all these different theories and conspiracies. This is not a present-day phenomenon; even before Jesus’s ascension, people gathered around Him and asked, “Lord, are You at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” Jesus answered, “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by His own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:6-8). Jesus refocused their attention on the mission: to be His witness to all the world.
But even after Jesus ascended, Acts 1:10-11 tells us, “…two men dressed in white stood beside them. ‘Men of Galilee,’ they said, ‘why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.’” As Christians, we are not supposed to just stand and look at the sky. Instead of spending time trying to match what we see in the media and fit it into the bits and the pieces that we know about the end times in Scripture, we should seek to grow deeper in our relationship with Jesus through His Word.
Jesus invites us to see the world around us and to actively participate in His kingdom work. The work that we do is empowered by the Holy Spirit and the very truth that Jesus is coming again.
Blessed Jesus, thank You for the promise that You are coming again. This gives me a real, powerful and abiding hope. Show me how I can actively participate in Your kingdom work. Praise You!
