Psalms 105-106
1 Corinthians 3
“He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” —Revelation 22:20, ESV
In the book of Revelation, we are told what will happen in the end times. Although some prophecies are confusing and difficult to interpret, we find a hope that we can hold on to in the last chapter. John writes, “And he said to me, ‘These words are trustworthy and true. And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent His angel to show His servants what must soon take place.’ ‘And behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.’” (Revelation 22:6-7, ESV).
There is such comfort in the words, “Behold, I am coming soon.” We can live today in absolute faith and belief in that promise, the fulfilment of all our hope. Now, when we hear the word “soon” we may think “2,000 years is a very long time…” Yet, more than a temporal word, “soon” is a word of attitude, a word of expectation and a word of priority.
Several years ago on Christmas Eve, my (Sandra Ryan’s) family received news that my mother had stage four cancer. That was tough news and it took us a while to process. As I thought and prayed about the situation, I asked myself, what new information do I have here? At that time, my mother was in her eighties and the truth is everyone’s time on earth is finite. Thankfully, my mother was asymptomatic, which meant she was not in pain. In fact, it was from a regular checkup that the doctor found the cancer. Although the doctors could not tell us how long she had, they made this statement: “She will die soon.”
During that time, my two sisters lived very close to my mother and were able to see her every day and spend time with her. I lived farther away and was pretty busy. Although I loved my mother very much, I kept telling her, “Yes, Mom, I’ll come soon. I’ll visit soon.” But let’s be honest, my mother was in her eighties and even though I did not know when “soon” was, I knew I needed to realign my priorities. I wanted to spend time doing the most important things.
Jesus said, “Behold, I am coming soon.” Will it happen in our generation? We do not know, but one thing for sure is that our generation, as much as every generation that preceded us, needs to know that Jesus Christ is coming soon—this is a priority and deserves our lives, our attention and our energy.
Is our life aligned with this truth?
Lord Jesus Christ, help me to align my life with the truth that You are coming soon. May I place a priority in spreading Your good news to the world. Thank You, Lord.
