Nehemiah 1-3
Acts 2:1-21

“The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” Deuteronomy 33:27

One day, as Jesus and His disciples were walking on the road, they passed by a man born blind. The disciples asked Jesus, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” (John 9:2). Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him” (John 9:3). Jesus placed an emphasis on a kind of work that only God can do. In other words, there are works that human ingenuity, human ability, human wisdom and human resources cannot do.
When I (Finu Iype) think about the works that only God can do, how God puts it all together and how He is all powerful, I think of my daughter, Lauren, who is 5 years old. Lauren has a deep love for swimming. Every time we go on vacation and stay at a hotel, she goes, “Daddy, I want to go to the pool! Can I please go swimming?” I would take her to the pool area and we would get into the water. But there is just one little problem about Lauren and her passion for swimming—she does not know how to swim!
When we are both in the pool, Lauren would say, “Okay Daddy, hands out!” This is my cue to put my hands out and she would lay on top of my arms. Then, she will say, “Okay Daddy, let’s go swimming!” And by that, I now need to walk the circumference of the pool with my daughter so that she could “swim.” What is interesting is that Lauren does not just lay there, she is literally splashing her hands and chopping her feet; this girl thinks she is swimming! After a few rounds, I wrap her up in a towel and take her back to the hotel room. When we are in—she usually walks ahead of me—she proudly declares, “Mommy, I had a great swim!” But here is the point, she never mentioned my name when I did all the work! Like my daughter, this is how some of us are—we do not understand that God is the One that holds us together.
Some of us may be stressed, depressed, worried or anxious right now, but the great news is that the power of God is available to those who believe in the name of Jesus. He invites us to call on Him, like my daughter called on me.
May we find peace in our schooling, in our workplace, in our marriage, in our parenting, in our health, in whatever circumstances we are in, knowing that the everlasting arms are holding us up.
Almighty God, what peace and comfort it gives me to know that Your everlasting arms are holding me up. No matter the circumstances that I face, I know You are working mightily. Thank You, Lord.
