Genesis 4-6
Matthew 2

“Come to Me…” Matthew 11:28

Jesus is the One who holds all things together. Without Him, it all falls apart. Paul tells us, “The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:15-17).

Yet, Jesus is not only the Head of creation; He is also the head of the Church. Paul continues, “And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything He might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through His blood, shed on the cross” (Colossians 1:18-20). In other words, it is not who we are or what we have done that brings about reconciliation with God; it is who Jesus is and what He has done for us that brings us peace with God. In a world filled with religion that is often rooted in a quest to attain heaven, we need to understand how important this truth is, because we sometimes drift into thinking it is because of our religious behaviours, or our best efforts to please and satisfy God, or our devotion that leads us to be acceptable before God.

However, when we consider the primary call of Jesus, it is actually to Himself. In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Jesus is calling everyone to come, not to a set of rules or a grand idea, but simply to Himself. Why? Because at the heart of Christianity is a relationship, not a way of life or an idea, but a Person. Jesus’s call is to everyone in this world; to those who are weary and heavy laden, tired of rules upon rules in a quest to please God, but never be filled with the joy of reconciliation.

Do we find ourselves working hard at earning the favour of God? May we hear the call of Jesus today and simply come to Him, just as we are.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, I simply come to You, laying down my best efforts and rules to try and please You. Thank You that I can simply come to You just as I am.
