Ecclesiastes 10-12
Galatians 1
“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” 1 Corinthians 12:27
From the opening verse of this devotion, Paul draws our attention to the body of Christ and states that every Christian is part of it. Paul’s point begs these the questions: Who is building this body? Who is putting all the members together? Who is the one in charge? We may ask these questions because we are curious and are seeking to comprehend, or maybe we are unhappy and want to find the person in-charge so that we could make our complaint: “I don’t want to be a part of the body. I just want to do Christianity on my own. I don’t like where I have been placed.”
From a closer examination of 1 Corinthians 12, we will notice that the opening and closing paragraphs point to the same Spirit, same God, same Lord that determines and distributes gifts. In other words, God is the One assembling and building this body. 1 Corinthians 12:18 tells us, “…God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as He wanted them to be.” God is not just arbitrarily building a body. He pays close attention to how the body is assembled and carefully places each and every member of the body of Christ in their right place, person by person. Every part of the body is essential, even the parts that are small and often covered up, like teeth. The body does not need 10 ears; it only needs 2, just as there only need to be 2 eyes, 2 big toes and 2 little toes. For the body to grow and function it needs every member to be present and doing what it is designed to do.
Some of us may fear that we may be placed somewhere that we do not want to be and do something we absolutely hate, but this could not be further from the truth of who God is. Our God is a personal God; He knows who we are and what we can do. Why? Because He created us and gifted us. He placed us in a body so that we can be in a mutually dependent and beneficial relationship, because we cannot grow alone, we need each other.
Just as God assembles the body of Christ, the Church, we can find comfort in knowing that there is a grand design and a plan for the body. It is not random or haphazard. The same authority, attention to detail and design that marks the creation of each individual is the same process that He uses to build His Church.
May we yield to what God has created us to do for His kingdom.
Dear Jesus, thank You for creating me uniquely the way I am with a purpose and a plan. Please help me to yield to what You are calling me to do for Your kingdom. Praise You!
