Proverbs 16-18
2 Corinthians 6
“Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.” John 6:32
After feeding a multitude of people with only five loaves and two fish, the crowd followed Jesus, looking for Him to feed them. The crowd demanded, “Sir, always give us this bread” (John 6:32). Jesus told them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty….For I have come down from heaven not to do My will but to do the will of Him who sent Me” (John 6:35, 38). Jesus spoke plainly to this group about where they could find this bread from heaven but the crowd grumbled. They questioned, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can He now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?” (John 6:42). The crowd’s response raised an important question for us: What do we do when we find out that God is different than what we think He should be? Do we complain? Do we grumble? Beware of grumbling when we do not get our way because we might be missing out on what God is trying to do in our life.
Despite the grumbling, Jesus did not change the truth of who He is just because it makes us uncomfortable or it offends us. In fact, He often leans into the life that we are holding onto that gets in the way of the truth that He is teaching us. Jesus continued, “Stop grumbling among yourselves….Very truly I tell you, the One who believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world” (John 6:43, 47-51). The crowd then became offended by Jesus’s response and exclaimed, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” (John 6:52).
The crowd started the day convinced that Jesus was the prophet that Moses talked about, but by the end of the day, they despised and deserted Him. They wanted the blessings but were not willing to bow down to who He is—the Son of God, the bread of life, who came down from heaven for them.
As a result, John 6:66 tells us, “From this time many of His disciples turned back and no longer followed Him.” The grumbling of the crowd eventually led them to abandon Jesus.
Precious Jesus, thank You for being the bread of life that came down from heaven. In You there is true life. Praise You!
