2 Chronicles 15-16 | John 12:27-50

“I have not departed from the commands of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my daily bread.” Job 23:12

What gives us security in our life? Where do we place our trust? Some of us may find our security and trust in our career, our education, our self-help wisdom, our favourite podcaster or even on the advice of our therapist. While working hard on our career, bettering ourselves through education, reading all kinds of books, listening to others and getting therapy are not bad things, we should not build our lives on them. Our real adversary would love for us to find our security in these things, but ultimately, these things should not be our true source of confidence. Instead, we are called to stand firm in the faith—in the Son of God who loves us and gave Himself up for us all. Jesus Christ is the Rock on which we stand.

Now, how do we stand on the rock of Christ? In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells us, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash” (Matthew 7:24-27). Jesus calls us to build our lives on His Word.

How? Jesus talks about building our life on His Word by putting it into practice. To do so, we must know His Word. This begs the question: how well do we know God’s Word? If we are financially successful but immature in our knowledge of Christ, we are on shaky ground. If we can fathom all worldly wisdom and knowledge but do not know His Word, we are in danger of a collapse in our life.

Notice that Jesus said, “The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew” and not “If the rain came down…” Storms will come in our life. When those winds and waves pound against us, if we are not standing firm on Christ and what He has done for us, it will be an epic collapse. We cannot stand firm in the faith when we have no foundation because we do not know the contents of that faith. May we resolve to read God’s Word daily and memorize Scripture. I (Brett McBride) guarantee if we get His Word into us, it will change our lives.

PRAYER

Precious Jesus, Your Word is what I want to build my life upon. You are my firm foundation. Help me to be consistent in reading Your Word each day. Thank You, Lord.
