Joshua 4-6

Luke 1:1-20

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”   —Proverbs 3:5-6

Everyone needs someone or something they can trust. It gives us security and peace of mind being able to depend on someone or having something that is always there for us. As a result, many depend on their careers, investments, a spouse, family or friend. These are entirely legitimate, but to place our dependence on them is like building a house without foundation—what if one or more of these areas starts to crumble?

      People often spend their lives striving for success in areas that, in the end, do not deliver real contentment, security or provide spiritual growth. But when Jesus Christ comes into our lives, we have an entirely different foundation. Nothing can tear down Jesus, and in Him, we have someone who loves us with the greatest love there is, someone we can trust with all our hearts and someone we can place our faith in completely.

      The faith we are talking about here is the God given kind, not the common-sense faith, which we put into our cars to get us to work or our alarm clocks to wake us up. The faith we discover when Christ comes into our lives is derived from an attitude of dependence on Him in which we actively trust Him to take the reins of our lives. This is the relationship God originally created us for. When He placed the first man and woman in the Garden of Eden, God’s intention was that they would trust Him for everything they need and live in the security of that trust.

      God’s plan for our salvation includes resurrecting His Son from the dead, giving us a Saviour whom we can put our faith in for everything He promises, and most importantly, indwelling His Spirit to work in our lives. When we call Jesus our Saviour we are no longer in our sin, but are reconciled to God and restored to a relationship of trust with Him. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”

      It is good and healthy to put our time and energy into our families, friends and careers, but when Christ is Lord of our lives, we can enjoy them wholeheartedly and live fearlessly, knowing Jesus is always there for us, especially when other things fade away. Jesus will not disappear, because He comes from the highest authority there is, and is someone we can trust through thick and thin. In a world full of uncertainty, Jesus is our anchor, our peace of mind and our constant, abiding security.

Prayer: Precious Jesus, You are the firm foundation to build my life upon. You are the security that I can hold on to when the things in life fall apart. Thank You, Jesus.
